Previous attempts to reform FSARS

August 14th, 2018 - The IGP in compliance with the Presidential directives ordered the immediate overhauling of SARS.
August 7th, 2015 - Under the former Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase on, SARS was split into two units with a view to checking human rights abuses.

December 3rd, 2017 - The IGP directed the immediate reorganization of SARS nationwide.
In June last year, a presidential panel established to address abuses by SARS submitted recommendations to President Buhari, which are yet to be implemented according to Amnesty International.

January 21st, 2019 - The IGP said “a comprehensive reform both in terms of ethics, Mode of Operation, nomenclature & orientation, function delineation, Command & control, weaponry accountability mechanism will be undertaken in SARS”.

September 22nd, 2016 - Under the former IGP Ibrahim K. Idris told SARS personnel “You should respect the constitutional right of every Nigerian; you don't have authority to take lives, you don't have authority to change a civil case to a criminal case, you dont have the right to torture suspects”.
