Lekki Toll Gate Massacre

On 20 October peaceful protesters were reportedly shot dead when the Nigerian Army opened fire on protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate. At about 6.45 pm Tuesday, October 20th, several social media accounts revealed peaceful protesters were allegedly being shot at by the Nigerian military at the Lekki toll gate holdout. Protesters were waving the Nigerian flag and singing the national anthem, other videos showed protesters sitting down.

Lagos State Government had issued a directive to extend the enforcement of its 24hour curfew from 4pm today to 9pm, to enable residents stuck in traffic to get to their destinations. This was disclosed by the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday evening via the state’s official Twitter handle.

At approximately 10 pm, the Lagos State Government orders an investigation into the Lekki Toll Plaza shooting that was allegedly done by men of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday evening. This was disclosed in a statement issued by the state’s Commissioner of Information and Strategy, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, via his Twitter handle.

Former US Presidential Candidate, Hillary Clinton, calls on President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration and the Nigerian Army to stop the killing of young protesters in the country. Several other notable leaders across the world start tweeting about the alleged “massacre” at the Lekki Toll.

At approximately 11 pm, GT Bank’s branch on Admiralty Way, Lekki, Lagos state was allegedly set ablaze in the middle of the night by hoodlums disguised as #EndSARS protesters. This was disclosed by eyewitnesses around the affected branch, through their respective Twitter accounts.

An on-the-ground investigation by Amnesty International has confirmed that the Nigerian army and police killed peaceful protesters. Below is a link to the timeline which collates video and photograph footage to confirm that army vehicles left the Bonny Camp - a military base approximately a seven-minute drive from the Lekki Toll Gate at 18:29 local time on 20 October. Wednesday 21st October, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu ordered the withdrawal of all Police Officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country, with the exemption of those in Government houses, the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.
I. Lagos State Government suspended all government activities and declared lockdown for 72 hours in view of growing violence in the state. The Governor had earlier visited the injured protesters at the hospitals where they received treatment and also stated via a broadcast that there was no record of fatality in the controversial Lekki Toll Plaza shooting on Tuesday.
II. Lagos state Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu blamed forces beyond his direct control for the attack on #EndSARS protesters in the state, stating that there were no recorded fatalities in the Lekki shooting as against widespread social media reports to the contrary.
III. Lagos State Governor Jide Sanwo-Olu confirms two people had died as a result of the Lekki Shooting later on in the day.
IV. The United Kingdom High Commission in Nigeria announced the shutdown of its VISA application centers in Nigeria for the next 48 hours, with immediate effect, due to the ongoing #EndSARS protests in the country.
V. Television Continental (TVC) station in the Ikosi-Ketu area of Lagos state was allegedly burnt down by hoodlums who attacked the building. This was disclosed by some residents, who sent videos on social media.
VI. A popular talkshow program, YourView, was on when the hoodlums besieged the station. The program host, Morayo Afolabi-Brown asked to go on a commercial break but the station has since been off-air.
VII. Also on Wednesday, another loacal TV station, Channels Television went off-air.
VIII. The headquarters of the Nigerian Ports Authority in Marina, Lagos was also reportedly set on fire by hoodlums involved in the #EndSARS protests.
IX. Angry youths also stormed a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) station in Oyingbo and set several buses ablaze. The Circle Mall in Lekki also came under attack, while popular retail store ShopRite was looted.
X. There were also reports suggesting that enraged protesters attacked Iga Idugaran, the palace of the Oba of Lagos. The mob also set Adekunle police station near the Third Mainland Bridge on fire after two of their residents were allegedly shot by the police on Wednesday morning.
XI. Hundreds of Nigerians in the UK rallied in front of the British Parliament in London Wednesday, as widespread international condemnation of the shooting of peaceful protesters in Lagos on Tuesday night grows.
XII. The African Union speaks on #EndsSARS.
XIII. Around 1 am, The Nigerian Army took to their official Twitter handle and denied deploying soldiers to attack #EndSARS protesters who defied the imposed curfew and peacefully assembled at the Lekki Toll Plaza, despite video evidence showing men in uniform executing the dastardly act.

Thursday 22nd October, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has debunked claims that there was an order for the removal of the closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) at the Lekki toll Plaza where the Nigerian military shot unarmed #EndSARS protesters.The governor said the footage of the surveillance cameras will be made available to a properly constituted investigative panel which will be set up on Monday as evidence so it can be properly investigated.
I. According to the governor, there was no order for the lights at the toll plaza to put off. Again, he said the lights were put off as a result of the curfew that was put in place.
II. Amnesty said it had received reports that shortly before the shootings, CCTV security cameras at the Lekki toll gates, where protesters had been camped for two weeks, were removed by government officials and electricity was cut to prevent evidence emerging of the violence. The report backs up footage and images on social media that showed violence against protesters in pitch darkness.
III. On a viral photo spread across social media of a man carrying disconnected cameras away from the Lekki toll gate, Sanwo-Olu said: “the cameras you saw are not security or motion cameras, they are laser cameras for vehicles.”
IV. Amnesty International said in a report Wednesday night that twelve people were killed, but that figure could be much higher.
V. Thirty five members of the National Assembly have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency identify all the soldiers who attacked peaceful #EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate on Tuesday night and prosecute them for murder[IO3].
VI. Later in the evening by 7 pm, Nigeria’s President Buhari addresses the country in a nationwide broadcast.
